Probably the Patron Saint of these taxi drivers who offer private tours is George the famous Taxi Driver of Athens who sold his restaurant in New York to return to Greece. His service, manners and knowledge set the standards for a horde of other taxi drivers in Athens who now have websites and offer the same kind of service, though one cannot judge a taxi driver on the ability of his webmaster, but only on the experience of those who have used him before. What can I say about George that has not already been said on the cruise boards and on the testimonial pages of his website? George may not have been the first to offer private tours of Athens and the Greek mainland, but he was the one who raised the standards of Athenian taxi drivers and showed them that a nice new Mercedes, politeness, being well-dressed, knowlegable and not smoking, combined with the power of the internet is the high road to success. His American-born son Dennis provides limo service for groups that are too large for the taxi. But with several other drivers cooperating with him, all friendly, knowledgable and non-smoking English speakers with luxury Mercedes (some with TVs if you have kids who may not find the landcape as facinating as you do), even groups can be accomodated on his tours of Delphi, the Argolis, Meteora and the sites of Athens and the mainland of Greece.
