Theatre Holidays in Archaia Epidavros

Perform a Greek Tragedy in Greece!
Based at Epidavros. Near the famous Amphitheatre of Epidavros.
15 days of performing, excursions, dancing, theatre, mythology, swimming, rehearsals on a boat and seaside dining.
Professional coaching by a drama teacher offers you the opportunity of a unique and creative journey through the culture of Greece.
The theatre course will be based on a classic tragedy from the family history of the royal family of Argos, such as that of Electra or Agamemnon.
At the end of this 15-day course we will be performing the play at the Pine Tree Theatre (The Treeater) with its views out over the bay, shaded by a huge Pine-tree.
Rehearsals will be held during the cooler hours of the morning. The afternoons will be free except when on a day-trip or snorkelling around the underwater remains of the old city.
There is a varied programme for the evenings. We will be going to 2 performances at the ancient theatre of Epidavros where the classic tragedies and comedies are played every weekend during the summer festival. One evening will be spent learning Greek dances so that you can dance the traditional Greek dances with villagers at a special tavern.
We will be making two day-trips to Mycenae and the big Theatre of Epidavros which will help to bring the play to life. At these unique locations the course participants will retell the mythological stories, rehears their monoloques and so get the feel of how it is to play in such a huge theatre as Epidavros. In addition, there will be more than enough leisure time to enjoy relaxing on the beaches and outdoor cafes, taking part in the rhythm of life in modern Greece or going on trips together.

Karen de Vries works as an actress, a drama teacher, director and trainer in the Netherlands and started in 1996 giving her own theatre course in Epidavros. Since then, every summer she has coached Dutch amateur players through a production, while directing, teaching Greek dancing and guiding the excursions. From 2002 the course will be offered as an international course intended primarily to allow amateur theatre groups and actors to meet each other and play together in a Greek tragedy.
Her love for Greece began in 1986 when she visited the Theatre of Epidavros for the first time. It was love at first sight, and she has since spent a few months every year living at Archaia Epidavros, and will not miss any performance given at the ancient theatre.
