GREECE THROUGH THE CENTURIES (7 DAYS)

Pre-history, the Classical period, the Roman Domination, the Byzantine Empire, the Crusades, the Modern Times. Greece through the centuries will unfold before you on this 7 day – 6 night tour.

Day 1:  Leave by the coastal road to Corinth Canal (short stop). Drive on and visit the Theater of Epidaurus, famous for its remarkable acoustics. Then proceed to the Town of Nafplion (short stop), drive on to Mycenae and visit the archaeological site and the Tomb of Agamemnon. Then depart for Olympia through Central Peloponnese and the towns of Tripoli and Megalopolis.  Dinner and overnight in Olympia, the cradle of the Olympic Games.

Day 2:  In the morning visit the archaeological site with the Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus, the Ancient Stadium and the archaeological museum.  Then drive on through the plains of Ilia and Achaia until the magnificent bridge which is crossing the Corinthian Bay from Rion to Antirion.  Pass by the picturesque towns of Nafpaktos (Lepanto) and Itea, and arrive in Delphi.  Dinner and overnight.

Day 3:  In the morning visit the archaeological site and the museum.  Depart for Kalambaka, a small town situated at the foot of the astonishing complex of Meteora. Dinner and overnight.

meteora, greeceDay 4: Visit Meteora among striking scenery, where perched on top of huge rocks which seem to be suspended in mid-air, stand ageless monasteries, where you can see exquisite specimens of Byzantine art.  Depart from Kalambaka, drive through Trikala and Larissa, arrive and visit the archaeological site of Dion. Also admire from a distance the gigantic figure of Mount Olympos, the highest mountain in Greece and home of the 12 gods in Greek mythology. Then depart for the town of Naoussa.  Arrival, dinner and overnight.   

Day 5:  Depart in the morning for the town of Kastoria, the center of the Greek fur industry, famous also for its beautiful lake.  A prehistoric lake settlement 7,000 years old, was discovered here and you can admire the rare findings in the tiny local museum together with the recreation of the old settlement. After the visit to Kastoria, continue driving and arrive in the picturesque town of Edessa.  Here you can sit by the waterfall, the town’s famous landmark, and enjoy a refreshment.  Return to Naoussa for dinner and overnight.

Day 6:  Leave in the morning for Pella, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia.  After visiting the site, depart for Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece.  Visit the city and the archaeological museum.  Return to Naoussa for dinner and overnight.

Day 7:  Depart from Naoussa in the morning and since the area is famous for the production of some of the finest wines in Greece, we shall make a very interesting visit to the local winery of “Boutari”.  After the visit we shall drive to Vergina. Visit this important museum with all the astonishing and priceless findings belonging to the Macedonian civilization which recent excavations brought to light.

Here, you will also see the remains of the palace of King Philippos, father of Alexander the Great.  After the visit, begin driving south, through the Valley of Tempi, Lamia, Thermopylae (short stop across to Leonidas’ monument), and Kammena Vourla.  Arrive in Athens late afternoon.
