Nikos and Carolinas Plaka House
At
the foot of the Acropolis is a wonderfully hidden surprise. To get to
here, you must walk up a wide set of stone stairs beside Agios
Nikólaos Ragavás church which was built in the 11th century Byzantine
era. It was repaired in the 18th century and restored again in the
1970s. The Church of St. Nicholas was the first church to receive a bell
in Athens after the 1821 War of Independence. This same bell was the
first to ring after the city's liberation from the Germans on October
12, 1944. This is a 2 bedroom apartment that ideally sleeps 3 but can
accommodate 4 with the sofa bed in the living room. What is truly
wonderful about this place is the large garden where you can eat dinner,
drink coffee or talk to Kitoo the 17 year old resident cat. Directly
behind this house is a multi-level park and the Acropolis. The 2nd and smaller bedroom has a wall unit for storage and hanging clothes. There is also a very private terrace from the 2nd bedroom that is completely enclosed in vines and trees. This is a rare gem in the heart of Plaka.
