The Farm House Compound is a detached traditional Sifnian house, actually a housing compound consisting of four buildings. Ideal for 8 persons that love walking, reading, and privacy ! It is situated on a slope facing the island's highest point at Profitis Ilias, and sits on the edge of the hamlet of Eleimonas-Katavati, very traditional and tranquil neighborhood, on a hill above the main village of Apollonia. In general the house has preserved the vernacular architectural style of the Cycladic islands with very few concessions to modern influences. Each building is a Cycladic cube built of local schist stone, found on site, some of it whitewashed and some left in its original color. They are connected by stone-paved yards, with pergolas and plants (hibiscus, lemon trees, herbs) and surrounded by shaded verandas, a thrashing floor and a garden planted with herbs, vines, fruit, olive and pine trees. Originally a farm house with stables, it was rebuilt in 2005 as a vacation house for a large family intended to provide ample space to adults and children allowing both for privacy and shared spaces. The house combines traditional style and materials with the level of functionality and comfort expected of a holiday home. The house sits on a private lot of land of 1200 sq. meters, and it is consisted of 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 1 living room, 1 sitting room, 1 fully equipped kitchen and 1 smaller equipped kitchen, dispersed in 4 buildings. This house compound is surrounded by large verandas, sheltered yards and patios with panoramic views of the surrounding villages and valleys. The old Barn House” is the largest of the 4 buildings, and it has 3 bedrooms and can easily accommodate 4 adults or alternatively, a couple with 3 children. There is one bathroom, a small kitchen and sitting area with a clavinova for the musically gifted. The main bedroom of the barn house has a platform bed with 3 single mattresses (2 of which can be joined to form a double bed), and a small fireplace on the one side (not very useful in the summer). The two other bedrooms each have a wide single bed and are next to a shaded veranda a few steps above the garden. Each bedroom has ample closet space. The second building (the Master Bedroom) is a large 60 sq. meter bedroom (wide queen size bed) with en suite bathroom (including washing machine). There are closets and bookshelves and a good desk for writing. The third building (the Common Building), the only one which is not a restoration of an original structure, sits in the center of the property and it is consisted of a large living room and a fully equipped kitchen. There are sofas, a dining table seating 8 and a library with a collection of travel literature, mostly in English. Internet access is available (through wall mount PC socket) and a CD player. The veranda, with director’s chairs, recliners and side table, right outside the sitting room provides a panoramic view of the island interior (the hills of Agios Antreas, Profitis Ilias and the valleys of Kamares and Kortsoudi) is a wonderful place to sit and watch the setting sun (and for those so inclined to have an early evening sip of ouzo) and the brilliant constellations of the Greek summer nights. On the other side of the property, there is the smaller, fourth, building (the Guest House) consisting of a bedroom with a queen size bed and chest of drawers and its own bathroom up a few steps. There are dramatic views of the valley towards the port of Kamares from the narrow window opposite the bed. The Farm House is 800 meters from the central square of Apollonia, a distance covered through flagstone footpaths. It is accessible by pedestrian footpath or scooter only as there are no roads for cars in the old villages. The nearest car road is 200 m. away, where a car can be parked, is accessible through a partially paved footpath, ascending a hill (on the way to the house), lined with oregano and caper plants. It should be mentioned that this house is not suitable for guests who are looking for spa-like holidays with car parking outside the front door. You can click on the above photos
