Acropolis Tour with Theresa Mitsopoulou

Hi Matt,

Just came back from my Acropolis Tour. Thank you and George for involving me in the process. I am 42 years old , I ve been visiting the Acropolis since I was 5 , but never got so much info out of one visit as I did today.

The reservation was made by George last evening. I was on instructions to meet my tour guide at 10:00am after purchasing my ticket at the kiosk for a tour that would last  2 hours.

... I arrived on time it was not difficult to identify the distinguised looking Mrs.Mitsopoulou who walked up to me and politelly asked me if I was Vassilis. She then ran a check on my family geneology tree and started the tour on the symbolism of the snake off a pattern on the marble .

We walked slow, very slow, it took us 1hour and 45 minutes to get from the ticket kiosk to the main gate 'The Propylea ' of the Temple. I tried to be as accomodating and as easy going as I could ,not to stress her. She reciprocated with vast amounts of trivial information relevant to the Temple and the History .

She had answers and references to practically everything I asked . For a moment I felt bad for dragging this distinguished smart lady up the foosteps of the Acropolis. I offered to carry her bag to which she repeatedly denied. As we eventually entered the Acropolis information came pouring down like a waterfall.

My time was running out, she insisted to continue, I could'nt pass up the offer so it turned out to be a 3 and half hours. Theresa could not walk to the other side where the Acropolis Museum  (she did not say so but it was obvious), she did however  direct me and show me pictures of what to look for in the 'kores and kouro statutes' inside the museum. By now I really had to go.

As I walked away I could not help but think that this lady is to the Parthenon, what an old monk to a monastery. If one has the time and patience to sit with her much can be gained. She has been a licensed Acropolis Guide since 1954, in my view a contemporary priestess .

I am also reminded of your introductory paragraph on your site , on the page 'WHEN TO COME TO ATHENS'

"When to come to Greece depends on the type of person you are and also when you are able. I am one of those people who thinks that anytime is a good time to come to Greece. Every seasons has its charm and every season has its drawbacks."

A Theresa Mitsopoulou tour depends on the type of person you are and the time you wish to spend on any detail .

Take Care
