Highlights:
The famous rocky towers of Meteora, with
ancient Byzantine monasteries at their pinnacles set up a unique and fantastic
landscape for our first stop.
Continuing our ride towards the Pindos
Mountains, with their Alpine-style rocky pinnacles, grassy meadows and
valleys, we reach the backbone of the Greek mainland. The area is steeped
in tradition and the lifestyle of many villagers has remained relatively
unchanged for hundreds of years. The mythical Olympus Peak the highest
in Greece, provides us with a much impressive scenery ...
Trip summary:
1st day. Arrive in Athens airport.
After the “bureaucratic” proceedings (contracts, payments, vouchers, road
books) you can drive directly to the national road and spent your first
night Kalambaka. (Athens-Kalambaka: 350 km)
2nd day. Don’t miss visiting the rocks of Meteora and the Byzantine monasteries on the top of them with dramatic view over the fertile plain and North Pindos. In the area you can join our outdoor activities as mountain bike, lake kayaking, rafting. Overnight in Kalambaka.
3rd day. An asphalt road drives you to the heart of the Pindos range, to reach the dirt roads that links the villages with alpine slopes and in the north the city of Metsovo, the capital of the shepherds of Mt. Pindos. Overnight in Metsovo. (Kalambaka-Metsovo: 67km)
4th day. Start the earliest possible so to admire the sunrise over the lake Aoos, and have plenty of time to cross the dirt roads in the forested mountains between Metsovo and Zagorochoria. (Metsovo-Zagorochoria: 102 km)
5th day. Maybe, the most adventurous day of the trip. Almost entirely on remote dirt roads the itinerary crosses the Northest part of Pindos to reach the picturesque town of Kastoria and Prespes, where the night is spent. (Zagorochoria-Kastoria: 140 km)
6th day. We drive south to Olympus, the Mountain of the Gods and Nympfaio. Dirt roads, springs, small rivers consist a unique scenery for off road driving. Overnight in Litochoro or in fishing villages by the sea. (Kastoria-Litochoro: 188 km)
7th Day. Take the national road (highway in most of its parts) back to Athens. If you arrive early wind about and visit the cape Sounio to enjoy the sunset over the Aegean Sea. For the night the district of Plaka is ideal for shopping and walks. (Litochoro-Athens: 387 km)
8th day.You can either return your
jeep the previous evening or drive with it in the airport and return it
there. Your trip ends in the airport and your flight back home.
Useful notice
4. In the countryside there are plenty
of dirt roads, either mentioned or not in your map. Be sure not to get
lost! In case of rain the condition of some of that can mess you in unexpected
problems.
5. The car insurance doesn’t cover damages
in the tires, windows and underneath the car
6. If you want to inscribe more drivers
on the contract, there is a surcharge per day & per driver.
