Project Hope for Greece

Responding to the deteriorating conditions in Greece, the Greek America Foundation is launching a new initiative entitled PROJECT HOPE FOR GREECE, a nation-wide fundraising effort that will support a wide range of important institutions in Greece that are responding to the crisis in substantive and systematic ways and working to solve important problems for the people of Greece.

The project’s purpose is to inspire philanthropy amongst Greek North Americans and to engage our network of friends and supporters to come together on a grassroots level and host a series of small events throughout North America that will raise funds for the campaign, whose proceeds will be shared with various accredited charitable organizations in Greece.

THE GOAL: To enlist 300 people/organizations who will become Ambassadors of Hope and host a small dinner, cocktail party or reception that will raise a minimum of $1000, and will simultaneously spread awareness about the deteriorating social conditions in Greece.

Funds from PROJECT HOPE FOR GREECE will support a series of charities and programs which are offering long-term, sustainable support to the people of Greece. A committee of volunteers and experts are vetting the organizations.

The first and most immediate funds will go to organizations that are serving Greece’s most vulnerable - the sick, the hungry, the homeless and the extremely poor. We will partner with organizations that have a proven track record in offering life-supporting services to these people.

The second disbursement of funds will be offered to organizations and institutions that emphasize vocational support and programs that will help young people get back to work. In addition to programs inside Athens and Thessaloniki, we will target areas outside of the big cities, including places impacted by natural disasters such as fires.

The third disbursement of funds will apply to educational institutions and special programs we will co-develop that will make education accessible to young people who traditionally do not have access to it. We will establish scholarships for disenfranchised or low-income Greek youth. We will work with US-accredited institutions of higher learning that offer accountability and monitoring of the students’ progress.
