Days 1& 2 Athens
Begin your walking trip of Greece in Athens, where
you'll meet the guides and the group; enjoy some great food and
walks through Athens' famous Plaka district, with reminders of
antiquity on virtually every corner; visit that jewel in the Ancient
Greek crown: the Acropolis.
Day 3 Nafplio Travel to the first
capital of modern Greece today, widely considered the most beautiful
town in the country. Visit one of its three castles, meander
through its narrow streets, take a dip in the crystal blue waters or
just sit at one of the sea-side cafes enjoying the view of the Gulf
of Argos.
Days 4-8 The Deep Mani
Head down into the famous and mysterious
Deep Mani to Limeni, our home base for several days. On your
way, stop in Gytheio, a seaside town home to excellent seafood and
the oldest antique shop in Greece. While in Mani, we walk
along the old Roman route to the extraordinary lake caves of Diros,
once inhabited by neolithic people, which we visit by rowboat.
Then, with the spiny, barren mountains on
our left and the crystal blue waters of the Messinian gulf on our
right, we walk through the tiny villages which dot the peninsula,
admiring the imposing stone tower houses, inspecting the ruins of a
13th-century castle, visiting charming Byzantine churches, and
greeting elderly Maniots. Wander through olive groves and
sample the rich peppery olive oil, one of the few products yielded
by this rocky land, as we head towards the ancient temple and
mosaics at Cape Tenaro, near the famed and dreaded entrance to
Hades, and the southernmost point of mainland Europe.
Our modern hotels in Deep Mani have been designed in the
style of the traditional stone tower-house, and one has a pool
overlooking the bay at Oitilo.
Days 9-11 Kythira Island
Today we head to Kythira, the mythological
birthplace of Aphrodite, Goddess of Love. Lovely walks
(punctuated by refreshing swims!) take us through the quiet
countryside and the charming white-washed homes of the main town,
Hora, where we'll sample some of the delicious local specialties.
Our hotel in Kythira has wonderful views of the sea as well as
a pool of its own.
Day 12 Return to Athens

farewell!
